It was established in 1887 with a squadron of the Reggments of Padua, Saluzzo, Caserta, Monferrato, Lucca and Piacenza with the name of Regiment Cavalleria Umberto I, which changed in 1897 into that of Cavalleggeri di Umbero I.
In 1887-1888 he contributed to the formation of the Cacciatori a Cavallo Squadron operating in Eritrea and for the 1895-96 and 1911-12 campaigns he provided the complements to the mobilized units.
During the Great War (1915-18) it disengaged the connection service for the first two years.
In the 1916 Gorizia action some of his departments try to break through enemy lines.
During the withdrawal of the army on the Piave disengagement service of protection to troops in retreat by beating on Meduna and on Cellina.
Sent to Albania, it is deployed on the lower Semeni, in surveillance of the territory from Fieri to the sea.
In October 1918 he contributed to the occupation of northern Albania.
The Regiment was dissolved on November 2, 1919 and its traditions were collected by the Regiment Cavalleggeri of Monferrato
