Rarest complet Boxed example of a WWII German Army Winkelmesser 35 artillery field clinometer
The W.M.35 Clinometer was used to raise the barrels of heavy artillery guns (commonly, the 10.5cm Field Howitzer) to the right inclination to hit the target. When used for ranging it would be set to the required quadrant elevation then fastened to the gun muzzle which was then raised. The setting of the elevation or the reading of the inclination was very accurate as this was a very long scale round the moving barrel. This type originated in WW1 and were used right up until the end of WW2.
Made of brass, aluminum, and steel by “Gustav Appel Spandau”, this Clinometer is in EXCELLENT condition for it’s age! There are some marks and staining, but features NO damage or corrosion! 100% functional, it comes complete in the original case, as well as the adjustment key. This is an EARLY variant, having a solid wood box, as opposed to the usual steel box these came in. Serial number is a LOW “98”. Could use a good polishing. A PERFECT item for any collection or display!
